What Are Dental Veneers?

Do you suffer from chipped or cracked teeth? Do you have a gap or gaps between teeth that are bothering you? Do you have excessive staining on your teeth that cannot be removed with professional whitening? You may feel frustrated with your smile, or even embarrassed to smile, but if this sounds like you, we’ve got some great news! There is a solution to your smile woes: veneers. Veneers and porcelain veneers are an excellent product for treating a variety of cosmetic dental issues without the time investment of braces. They are completely natural looking, painless, and can last up to 20 years with proper care. But what exactly are veneers, and what is the difference between veneers and porcelain veneers? Keep reading to find out.

What are the different types of Veneers?

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers, or veneers, are extremely thin sheets of either porcelain or a composite resin material, similar to the material used in dental fillings.

They are generally easier to replace than porcelain veneers, and are usually less expensive, too.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are also thin strips that adhere to the teeth. They are custom shaped to each tooth, and then put in place by Dr. Abelar. The benefits of porcelain veneers are that they require less removal of the enamel to adhere to the tooth, are thinner than traditional dental veneers, and they’re more stain resistant than dental veneers, too.

How are veneers bonded?

Each veneer would be a customized piece of porcelain. Hence, it will have to be fabricated according to the contour of your tooth. When you visit our dental clinic, we will take a precise mold of your teeth and have it sent to a dental laboratory for fabricating the veneer. The veneer will be fabricated to perfection in a couple of weeks, during which you will be asked to use a temporary veneer.

During the next visit, the dentist will prepare your tooth by cleaning and etching it using a suitable solution. This makes the surface of the tooth rough and allows the restoration to bond to it firmly. Dental adhesives will be used to bond the veneer to the tooth and a curing light is used to harden it. A bite test will ensure your ideal bite isn’t altered due to the restoration.

How are veneers applied?

You may have seen viral videos of people with shaved-down teeth prior to getting veneers. Though some of these videos are accurate, some are actually pre-crown, so if you have questions about how much natural tooth will remain following your veneer treatment, speak to Dr. Abelar, not an influencer!

Veneers are applied by roughing up the tooth so the porcelain adheres a bit better and fits into the mouth. Then the veneer is attached with an adhesive, and sealed into place. What remains is a beautiful looking tooth!

How long do veneers last?

Veneers can last 10-20 years before needing to be replaced if taken care of properly. What does that entail exactly? The same thing as proper care for your natural tooth – brushing and flossing twice a day for two minutes at a time. For veneers you will also want to avoid super crunchy or super chewy foods. For example, don’t bite into that whole apple, cut it into pieces, and skip the gummy fruit candies.

How much do veneers cost?

Veneers are priced per tooth, and cost depends on the tooth and of course how many teeth you choose to have treated. To schedule an appointment for an estimate with Dr. Abelar, please contact the office today.

Are you interested in getting Dental Veneers in San Diego, CA?

As we mentioned, veneers of any kind are a great way to address a long list of dental problems. If you are interested in learning more about veneers, here are a few things to consider:

  1. Make sure your oral health is good. This means no untreated cavities or gum disease, and that your teeth have been cleaned professionally prior to getting veneers.
  2. Veneers are a lifetime commitment, due to the amount of enamel removed. You can extend the life of your veneers by caring for your teeth as usual- brushing twice a day, flossing, and attending regular dental cleanings and exams with Dr. Abelar. But that being said, be prepared to replace your veneers within about 20 years of getting them (this will vary depending on veneer and patient).

If it’s time to speak to Dr. Abelar about Veneers, please contact the office today and schedule an appointment with Dr. Abelar.
