More Warnings About Braces By Mail

The quest for a healthier, straighter smile is one that has been around for decades, however with the popularity of social media and the focus on the face and smile in ‘selfies’ posted on popular social media sites like Instagram and Facebook, it has only intensified in some cases.

Young adults and even older adults are feeling pressure like never before to get that so-called perfect smile, but with orthodontics often not covered by insurance, they can sometimes be quite an investment. Still, many are finding out it pays to do it right the first time.

While orthodontists and dentists have been warning about direct by mail clear aligners for years, more complaints keep rolling in for these so-called bargain braces.

Made to mimic the aligners and results of aligners like Invisalign®, these designer imposters may look like the same thing as Invisalign®, but they certainly aren’t the same. For starters, Invisalign® aligners must be purchased through a dentist or orthodontist, not directly from the manufacturer.

Furthermore, when getting Invisalign®, the patient must see the orthodontist or dentist to have molds made, this is not done at home. This eliminates any risk of error, and creates the most accurate mold possible. This in turn creates a more accurate aligner.

Another difference between by-mail braces and Invisalign® is that Dr. Abelar will closely monitor your progress and make adjustments as necessary, in case of any issues with the aligner or the movement of the teeth. With by-mail aligners this is not possible, and you could be doing irreparable damage to your teeth without realizing it.

A recent article from the UK found users who lost teeth, or who were afraid to eat apples with their front teeth because they are afraid of losing those teeth if they use them to bite, thanks to an invisible aligner they purchased over the internet without the guidance of a dentist or orthodontist.

So, what can you do if you’d like that Instagram-ready smile, but are on a budget?

Check your dental insurance. Some policies will cover part of your orthodontic treatment
Get an estimate, and start saving
Look for financing from reputable medical credit lines

Remember, while Invisalign® may seem like a larger investment than by-mail braces, it will likely save you in the long run with less damage to the teeth.
