Bone Density And Oral Health

We hear it all the time: our oral health matters. In fact, oral health goes beyond just your mouth and can affect the whole body. From our brains to our hearts to even our bones, our oral health makes a huge difference in how our bodies work.

Recently, a study focused on the relationship between bone density and oral health. What it found was that those with better oral health had healthier bones throughout the body. If you’re concerned about keeping your bone density high, here are a few tips to help!

Exercise

Exercise is a great way to maintain bone density, because it strengthens the bones and the muscles. If you are new to exercise be sure to speak to your physician before embarking on any exercise programs. Even low impact exercise like yoga and stretching can make a big difference so don’t be afraid to get started!

Diet

What you eat matters. For bone health, a diet rich in calcium is imperative. But don’t limit yourself to just dairy. You can ge calcium from fish, dark leafy greens, and even some nuts!

Oral Health

As we mentioned before, maintaining your oral health is a great way to keep your bones strong. This means brushing your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes at a time, flossing at least one time per day (preferably at bed time) and attending routine dental exams and cleanings twice per year.

Vitamins

If you would like a little boost, vitamin supplements may help. Speak to your doctor about adding calcium hydroxyapatite, vitamin D3, vitamin E, and magnesium to your regimen.

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight and BMI can also be beneficial to your bones because it puts less strain on your bones. If you are struggling with your weight or would like to begin a weight loss program, speak to your doctor.

If you are ready to take your oral health to the next level and protect your teeth, gums, and bones, it’s time to schedule your cleaning and exam with Dr. Abelar. Remember: great oral health is a gateway to better overall health, including the density of our bones!
